Banská Bystrica Self-governing region (BBSGR) is located on the territory of the ancient historical counties - the counties of Zvolen, Gemer-Malohont, Tekov, Hont and Novohrad, so its coat-of-arms is divided to four fields – in one field the components of two former counties meet:
- In the first field there are spruces – the dominant elements of former Zvolen County’s coat-of-arms accorded in 1553.
- In the second field there is the knight from former Novohrad County’s coat-of-arms accorded in 1551.
- In the third field the heraldic sign of former Tekov County accorded in 1552 (cross bar) and heraldic sign of former Hont County accorded in 1550 (celestial bodies) are allied.
- In the forth field there is a castle – heraldic sign of former Gemer-Malohont County.
