Restaurants - Food in Slovakia
In Slovakia there are a lot of restaurants that offer typical Slovak specialities, and the specialities of the neighboring countries, too. Especially you can taste Hungarian, Czech and Austrian cooking that influenced the original Slovak cooking. The Slovak most typical of all Slovak dishes is "bryndzové halušky" - potato dumplings with special sheep's cheese and fried bacon. The quintessential Slovak soup is kapustnica, made with sauerkraut and smoked ham (or sausage). Cabbage is served with main entrees (such as pork cutlet), and potatoes (boiled, roasted, french-fried) come on the side. Other typical food is potato pancakes - haruľa, egume soup, mutton and lokše. Growing wine has also long been a tradition. The best areas for wine growing are south-eastern slopes of the Small Carpathians and Tokay region on the east of Slovakia. Another typical drink is liquor from juniper berries called borovička. Drinking hard spirits or plum brandy is also a tradition.
